I do believe that any film which is not a cheaply made or commercially successful, will always have a following. So it is with the '80's film 'Surf's Up.' The film was made in 1984 and was a box office hit, but it suffered from a poor casting and a storyline which, as others have pointed out, was a bit of a muddled mess. 'Surf's Up' was directed by Lloyd Kaufman and stars 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith' stars and '50's era surfers-Michael Douglas and Richard Dreyfus-as a couple who embark on a holiday to San Diego. While on vacation they meet up with an attractive young surfer named Yvette and, for some reason, she is instantly attracted to him. They decide to stay in the beach-house of the wealthy neighbor to the home of the Yvette's uncle, where they meet a good-looking woman named Elizabeth. Yvette gets the idea that he and Yvette should go on a long vacation together, and he gets permission from his ex-girlfriend to take her to San Diego. Meanwhile, Yvette's brother and his friends are planning a big party in Yvette's home, and the fun begins to get out of hand. It is just a fun film and a very good one, and the cast really did a great job. So many other films would have been disappointing, but the cast and crew did a great job. Most of the cast was very young and, although there were a few flaws, it did not take away from the film. Douglas is very good in the lead role, and he is just as good here as he was in '50's era films like 'True Romance' and 'Stardust.' The best part of the film is the story, which is, in a way, kind of like a modern-day 'Laurel and Hardy' movie-the hero is in love with the other woman, and, at times, he is unsure whether he should go along with his girlfriend's plans. It is also the best film in the '80's about romance. So I would recommend it to anyone who has a good time watching a film, and the cast and crew did a great job.
