This film, starring the English actress and director James McAvoy, is the latest in a series of films by the American director, whose previous work includes "What to Expect When You're Expecting", "The Celluloid Closet", "From the Dark", "Jurassic Park III", and "The Dark Knight Rises". The film "About a Boy" is a mixed bag, with the majority of the characters being likable and the plot works in the end. The plot is a simple story of a group of friends who are having a party at a house where a boy who is bullied at school is staying. There is tension and some drama with the story and the film does not have a "dark" or "gritty" feel to it. The film is told in an episodic fashion, with a running time of 83 minutes, so there are not many "high points" or "low points". The performances are good. The cast includes McAvoy, Timothee Chalamet, Dan Stevens, and Helena Bonham Carter. Dan Stevens is quite good in the role of the friend who is the center of the story. The film is a little different than the previous movies in the series, and it is better for that. The story is strong, and the characters are well defined and have an emotional connection with the viewer. There is one thing that I really liked about this film, and that is the camera work. It is always a good thing to see the camera work in a film, especially when the camera work is used in a different way than the previous films. I recommend this film to anyone who likes to see a good movie and is not bothered by the lack of a "dark" feel, for the fans of the series, but don't expect to see it as an adaptation of the books. 7/10.
