Faced with an unexpected call to adventure, a young woman is determined to escape her abusive father and pursue a better life, in the South Pacific, of the title. In fact, it is the title of a famous surf film by the German director Ralf Lassmann that seems to be very close to this film, although the latter is a little more uplifting and dramatic. That said, the film is really a lot more focused on the characters than Lassmann's film was, and its lack of overt action could have been an obstacle for viewers. Indeed, if you skip the introduction of the two main characters, you would have no idea of what they were up against, and their predicament, and the film would not have that much in common with the rest of the film. The main character's role is to remind us how much we are missing out on the "surf life" as a young woman once imagined it. In a way, she reminds us of what we want, even if we have it in our hands. This is what makes this film very successful: we are not alone in our quest. And it is also interesting to see the relationship of two women, so different from each other, who develop a very strong bond, despite their differences, and who also share a common bond, with each other. The first-rate performances by the two leads, Anna Schiele and Kate Hudson, also help to make this film interesting. We are in the South Pacific, the area that is also the site of the film's setting, and the action is shot in a beautiful natural setting, with very few special effects. This makes the film more realistic, and, at times, even humorous. The direction of director and writer Roger Michell is impressive, although the film's episodic nature could have been annoying for some viewers, especially for those who are used to the "full on action" in most films of this type. However, the film is very watchable, and is worth watching, even if you are not a big fan of film, or if you have seen other similar films of this type.
