Tau is a classy, deep, and thoughtful film that combines the complexities of the subject matter with a meditative, artistic narrative that presents the unique experiences of a single family. With a plot that spans several decades and a cast that is so exceptionally well-assembled, "Tau" is both engaging and rewarding to watch. Tangerine Dream's musical score is soothing and invigorating, and the film is so visually satisfying that I wish it had a musical score that matched the cinematography. The movie's cinematography is one of the best I've ever seen, and it makes "Tau" such a rewarding experience. The story unfolds with such a flow and clarity that I found myself wanting to see more of it. In the first half of the film, Tangerine Dream's use of flashbacks provides a window into the past of the main character. It's a fascinating and helpful approach to understanding the protagonist's emotional evolution. However, after a certain point, flashbacks become an ineffective tool to convey the emotions of the story. Because of this, the second half of the film is less engaging and more intense, while the flashback scenes are just a distraction from the main storyline. The flashback scenes are confusing and pointless. The main character's emotions and mental state were never questioned or explained. After the first flashback scene, the only thing that was certain was that the flashbacks did nothing to give us insight into his character. In addition, Tangerine Dream often makes the film look like a documentary or a series of sketches, with the characters and events not always portrayed in a way that fully conveys their complexity or true meaning. Tangerine Dream did the opposite of this with their film, which gave the film an almost documentary-like look. These two different approaches to their film is what makes "Tau" so appealing. It's hard to watch a film like "Tau" and be able to identify with it without taking it too seriously. The movie is not particularly cerebral, and it does not take itself too seriously. Instead, the film is engaging, powerful, and beautiful. It's a film that has never been done before. "Tau" is definitely one of the best films of the year.
