Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jared Leto star in "The Big Short" as a pair of Wall Street traders who stumble on a major financial scandal that changes their lives and their entire careers. Although the film is very clearly written, directed and produced by the duo, it is their portrayal of these characters that makes it a compelling drama. Gyllenhaal is superb as the two-faced, high-strung and egotistical Rick, who has no intention of letting his children (Sandra Bullock and Luke Wilson) know he has a second job. In fact, he has the opposite idea, and his career is about to be destroyed because of his financial adviser's (Tom Wilkinson) very public failure to stop the scandal. Meanwhile, Bullock and Wilson are equally as bad, but they are also honest and straight-laced, as they have no intention of letting their children know they are taking a second job. The film doesn't completely rely on the two stars' chemistry, but they are so believable as the two-faced characters, that I could actually feel their pain and emotions as they struggled with their "survivor's guilt" for the first time in their lives. The film also features an incredible supporting cast, which includes J.K. Simmons as Rick's friend and colleague, and Bill Hader as Rick's father, who is also an FBI agent. The film is also very funny, as it is the main character's job to make the jokes, as he doesn't have a sense of humor, and it is great to see a film about a father's love for his son, which is more than a little ironic as his character is very much a "dumb jock" character, who is very insecure and can't stand the idea of losing his job. Overall, "The Big Short" is an extremely intelligent and well-written film, and is easily one of the best films of 2011.
