Description The Most Unknown is an epic documentary film that sends nine scientists to extraordinary parts of the world to uncover unexpected answers to some of humanity's biggest questions. How did life begin? What is time? What is consciousness? How much do we really know? By introducing researchers from diverse backgrounds for the first time, then dropping them into new, immersive field work they previously hadn't tackled, the film reveals the true potential of interdisciplinary collaboration, pushing the boundaries of how science storytelling is approached. What emerges is a deeply human trip to the foundations of discovery and a powerful reminder that the unanswered questions are the most crucial ones to pose. Directed by Emmy-nominated and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Ian Cheney (The Search for General Tso, The City Dark) and advised by world-renowned filmmaker Werner Herzog (Fitzcarraldo, Aguirre, The Wrath of God, Grizzly Man), The Most Unknown is an ambitious look at a side of science never before shown on screen. The film was made possible by a grant from Science Sandbox, a Simons Foundation initiative dedicated to engaging everyone with the process of science.

In the film, The Most Unknown, Philip Seymour Hoffman played himself. He is one of the few actors who has succeeded in portraying the actor, who in his early career played characters of real life. Hoffman is at the top of his game. It is only in the last decade or so that he has gotten the recognition he deserves. Hoffman was a rich, glamorous and arrogant man who had the misfortune of falling in love with a less-than-talented woman. His life has been a series of disasters, but Hoffman is happy to admit that. Hoffman's performance is so pure and without false self-aggrandizement, it is hard to imagine anyone else in his place. Hoffman has shown that he is a very fine actor and that he is capable of portraying an extremely complex character. The film features interviews with real-life people who know Hoffman well. Hoffman himself played himself in a number of film roles and in a number of television shows, including "Mad Men." The film also includes interviews with real-life friends and colleagues of Hoffman. The film is structured in such a way that it can be seen as either a portrait of Hoffman or of Hoffman himself. It is not a documentary. The film takes as its subject the man who lived for the role of a professional actor, played in films and on television, who is being buried by the adulation of his peers. Hoffman's style is to put on the gloves and play himself. Hoffman has also been one of the leading contenders for an Oscar. In the end, Hoffman is nothing more than a figure in a story that is telling us how we should live our lives. His best movie is perhaps a tribute to the influence of his career on others.
